What is a split system?
A split system has an indoor unit on the wall and an outdoor unit outside, connected by insulated pipes.
It heats and cools one room efficiently and is often the right first step when a gas space heater is replaced.
The mistakes with split systems are sizing and placement:
- Too large and it switches on and off constantly.
- Placed for convenience and it blows on the sofa and misses the rest of the room.
We measure the room and stand in it before quoting.
Installed prices depend on the unit size, pipe run and electrical work; your written quote lists each.
How does a
split system work?
- Cooling: the indoor unit draws warm room air across a cold coil and returns it cooled, while the outdoor unit releases the heat outside.
- Heating: the cycle reverses and the outdoor unit draws heat from outside air, even on cold mornings.
What we check at your home
- Room size, ceiling height and insulation
- Window size and orientation
- Indoor unit position for airflow across the room
- Outdoor unit position, bracket or slab
- Pipe run length and cover
- Condensate drain route
- Circuit and switchboard capacity
Sizing guide
A starting point only. We size your system from measured rooms, insulation and window orientation.
Small rooms up to about 20 square metres.
Medium rooms and small open-plan areas.
Large living, kitchen and dining areas.
Running costs
and how to lower them
A correctly sized inverter system adjusts its speed instead of switching on and off, which keeps running costs down. The rest comes down to how it is used.
- Cool to 24 to 26 degrees and heat to 18 to 21 degrees; each degree further adds roughly 10 percent
- Use zones or close doors so you only condition the rooms you use
- Close curtains and blinds on hot afternoons
- Keep filters clean and service once a year
- Improve ceiling insulation where you can
At the assessment we estimate running costs for your home so you can compare options properly.

Frequently asked questions
about split system installation
It depends on the room size, ceiling height, insulation and windows. We measure the room and the quote states the capacity and why.
Usually half a day for a standard installation with the outdoor unit close to the indoor unit. Longer pipe runs or switchboard work add time, and the quote says so.
Yes. We plan placement and electrical work so further splits, or a move to multi-head, are straightforward.
It can be when it replaces an eligible gas space heater. We confirm at the assessment.

Brands we install
We install trusted household names and recommend the model that suits your home, not the one with the biggest margin.
Installation, servicing
and repairs
The team that installs your system services it. The first service is included, and after that we send a reminder each year so small faults are found before the first heatwave, not during it.
- Filter and coil clean
- Refrigerant pressures and electrical checks
- Drain flush and airflow check, recorded in your file
