What is ducted
reverse cycle air conditioning?
Ducted reverse cycle air conditioning heats and cools your entire home through a network of insulated ducts, with a discreet outlet in each room instead of wall units.
The indoor unit sits in the roof space and the outdoor unit outside, so the house stays quiet and the temperature stays even.
It is effective in every season, including humid summer days, and it is the most common replacement for a gas ducted heater in Melbourne homes.
Because it runs on electricity with inverter technology, it is efficient to run and can be paired with solar.
A complete installed system typically ranges from around $8,000 to $20,000 or more, depending on your home.

How does ducted
reverse cycle work?
The outdoor unit moves heat between the outside air and the refrigerant.
- Summer: it takes heat out of your home.
- Winter: it reverses and brings heat in, which is why it is called reverse cycle.
The indoor unit in the roof pushes conditioned, filtered air through the ducts to each outlet. A return air grille draws air back to be reconditioned.
Zoning dampers in the ducts open and close to send air only to the rooms you choose.
What we check at your home
- Roof space height and access for the indoor unit
- Existing ductwork: size, insulation and leaks
- Room sizes, insulation and window orientation
- Outdoor unit position for noise and airflow
- Switchboard capacity and the circuit required
- Zone plan for how your household uses the house
- Removal of any gas ducted heater
Sizing guide
A starting point only. We size your system from measured rooms, insulation and window orientation.
Two to three bedrooms, single storey, compact living area.
Three to four bedrooms with open-plan living.
Four or more bedrooms, double-storey or high ceilings.
Zoning and smart controls
for every room
Pair your ducted system with smart zoning and control each area from a wall panel or your phone.
Room-by-room control
Each zone has its own temperature setting.
Lower running costs
Only heat or cool the rooms you are using.
Smart sensors
Airflow adjusts automatically to hold each zone at the set temperature.
Running costs
and how to lower them
A correctly sized inverter system adjusts its speed instead of switching on and off, which keeps running costs down. The rest comes down to how it is used.
- Cool to 24 to 26 degrees and heat to 18 to 21 degrees; each degree further adds roughly 10 percent
- Use zones or close doors so you only condition the rooms you use
- Close curtains and blinds on hot afternoons
- Keep filters clean and service once a year
- Improve ceiling insulation where you can
At the assessment we estimate running costs for your home so you can compare options properly.
How we work
We listen first
Which rooms are uncomfortable, how the house is used, what is installed now and when you need a decision.
We measure your home
Room sizes, insulation, roof space, existing ductwork, switchboard capacity and the best outdoor unit position.
We explain your options
Usually two or three, with what each costs to run and which one we would choose for your home.
You get a clear, written quote
Equipment, inclusions, exclusions, any discount and your final price. No pressure to decide on the day.
Installed carefully, cleaned up after
You know who is coming and when. Handover ends with the controller in your hand and the paperwork in your inbox.
Frequently asked questions
about ducted reverse cycle air conditioning
Typically from around $8,000 for a smaller single-storey home to $20,000 or more for a large or double-storey home with several zones, before any discount.
Your written quote lists the equipment, ductwork, electrical work and any discount on one page.
Usually one to two days for a single-storey home, longer for double-storey homes or where ductwork is replaced. The timeline is agreed on the quote.
Sometimes. Ducts from older gas heaters are often undersized and poorly insulated for cooling, so we inspect them and replace only the runs that fail. The quote says which.
A ducted system needs a dedicated circuit. We check your switchboard at the assessment and any work is itemised on the quote, not discovered on the day.
Yes, when it replaces an eligible heater. Replacing a gas ducted heater attracts the largest discount. We confirm eligibility at the assessment and apply it on your quote.

Brands we install
We install trusted household names and recommend the model that suits your home, not the one with the biggest margin.
Installation, servicing
and repairs
The team that installs your system services it. The first service is included, and after that we send a reminder each year so small faults are found before the first heatwave, not during it.
- Filter and coil clean
- Refrigerant pressures and electrical checks
- Drain flush and airflow check, recorded in your file
