The system

What is a
multi-head split system?

A multi-head split connects two to five indoor units to a single outdoor unit.

  • Each room has its own controller, so a bedroom can be cool at night while the living room is off.
  • With no ducts in the roof, nothing is lost to the roof space.

It is a good fit for double-storey homes, townhouses, units and homes without usable roof space, and for replacing several gas space heaters at once.

Installed prices depend on the number of rooms and pipe run lengths; your written quote lists each room.

How it works

How does a
multi-head split work?

The outdoor unit circulates refrigerant to each indoor unit through insulated pipe runs.

Each indoor unit heats or cools its room independently, and the outdoor unit adjusts its output to match the rooms that are running.

The design work is in the placement: where each indoor unit sits for airflow and appearance, and how the pipes travel between rooms.

The assessment

What we check at your home

  • Which rooms need heating and cooling, and how they are used
  • Indoor unit type and position in each room
  • Pipe run routes, lengths and how they are concealed
  • Outdoor unit position and noise to neighbours
  • Total capacity so every room performs on the hottest day
  • Switchboard capacity and the circuit required
  • Any gas wall or space heaters to remove

Running costs

Running costs
and how to lower them

A correctly sized inverter system adjusts its speed instead of switching on and off, which keeps running costs down. The rest comes down to how it is used.

  • Cool to 24 to 26 degrees and heat to 18 to 21 degrees; each degree further adds roughly 10 percent
  • Use zones or close doors so you only condition the rooms you use
  • Close curtains and blinds on hot afternoons
  • Keep filters clean and service once a year
  • Improve ceiling insulation where you can

At the assessment we estimate running costs for your home so you can compare options properly.

Our process

How we work

01

We listen first

Which rooms are uncomfortable, how the house is used, what is installed now and when you need a decision.

02

We measure your home

Room sizes, insulation, roof space, existing ductwork, switchboard capacity and the best outdoor unit position.

03

We explain your options

Usually two or three, with what each costs to run and which one we would choose for your home.

04

You get a clear, written quote

Equipment, inclusions, exclusions, any discount and your final price. No pressure to decide on the day.

05

Installed carefully, cleaned up after

You know who is coming and when. Handover ends with the controller in your hand and the paperwork in your inbox.

Questions

Frequently asked questions
about multi-head split systems

How many rooms can one outdoor unit run?

Usually two to five indoor units. We check the total capacity against the outdoor unit so every room still performs on a 40 degree day.

Multi-head or several single splits?

Several single splits need several outdoor units. A multi-head keeps one outdoor unit, but every room depends on it. We weigh both for your house and the quote explains the choice.

Can indoor units be hidden?

Bulkhead units sit inside a ceiling bulkhead with only a grille visible. They need the ceiling space and cost more to install, so we recommend them where appearance matters.

Is a multi-head split eligible for the Victorian Energy Upgrades discount?

It can be, when it replaces an eligible gas heater. We confirm eligibility at the assessment and apply it on your quote.
